Troop 48 Update - 3/22/19

T-Shirt Orders due this Tuesday, March 26

Attached is an order form for Troop t-shirts, the prices and choices are shown on the form. All Scouts must have a Troop t-shirt for Camporee in April and enough t-shirts to wear each day for Skymont summer camp in June or the Summer Adventure in July. Orders and money for t-shirts are due to Mrs. Teri Gulati by this Tuesday March 26. We will not be able to accept orders after March 26. You can email your order to Mrs. Gulati at hgulati@aol.com by 3/26 if you can’t be at the Troop meeting. Please consider now if you will need a larger size soon or if you would like a long-sleeve t-shirt for the fall/winter, as we will not be ordering again for several months.

We have a full box of recycled Troop 48 T-shirts available at no cost. It would be best if your son had a clean shirt for each day of summer camp and the Summer Adventure so come look through the box at a Troop meeting. The alternative is to pack a small bottle of liquid clothes detergent so that he can hand wash his shirts in the campsite at summer camp. (The Scoutmaster will show him how.)

Congratulations to our Award Winners

The Scouts BSA Eastern District banquet was held last night, and Troop 48 was honored with several awards:

District Award of MeritJohn Campbell – This is the highest award the district can grant. Congratulations John! John was recognized for his service to the district as Friends of Scouting chair, his work in offering the God and Church and God and Life programs to the district, starting the new Cub Scout Pack 48, and his support of shooting sports and safety training.

Troop 48 Scouting HeroRob Ragland – Rob was selected as our troop’s outstanding volunteer this year. Thank you Rob for all you do as Assistant Scoutmaster for New Scouts, New Member Coordinator and Merit Badge Counselor!

Our Troop also won a ribbon for the National Outdoor Challenge recognizing certain outdoor activities requirements, and was also recognized for having more than 75% of our troop leadership trained for their positions. Thanks to all of our wonderful leaders for making our program outstanding!

Troop 48 90th Anniversary Celebration – Save the Date

Troop 48 will be celebrating our 90th year as a troop in 2019. A celebration banquet is being planned for Saturday, August 17, 2019 so please mark this on your calendar and plan to be there!

Citizenship in the Community Merit Badge Class

Assistant Scoutmaster Brent Snyder will be offering a Citizenship in the Community merit badge class starting April 2 at 6:00pm at Faith Presbyterian.  We will meet 4 to 5 times at this time (dates TBD), and will have one field trip to a Germantown or Collierville City Council meeting (TBD). Mr. Snyder will provide you with the dates after the first class session on April 2.  Sign- up with Mr. Snyder by April 2 if you are interested.

Health Forms due April 23

Parts A, B, and C should be completed annually for all Scouts and adults attending campouts and are due to Mr. Richard Ralph by April 23. Part C requires a doctor’s signature, so make your appointments now. New Scouts and new adults need to turn in Parts A and B and a copy of the insurance card to Mr. Ralph before attending a campout. Here is the link to the forms: Health Form Link

BSA Swim Check – Be Prepared

All Scouts and Dads need to pass the BSA Swim Check annually and qualify as a “BSA Swimmer” to participate in water activities with the Troop, such as canoeing, swimming or water sports. Our Swim Check will be held on Tuesday night, April 30th instead of our regular Troop meeting at the Germantown Athletic Club. If you haven’t been swimming in a while, it would be good to get some practice in now. Scouts who have not earned Second Class can complete requirements 5b and 5c. The requirements are listed below (you must use one of the strokes listed properly and have a strong stroke to pass as a Swimmer):

SWIMMER:

Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, and begin swimming. Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: sidestroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl; then swim 25 yards using an easy resting backstroke. The 100 yards must be swum continuously and include at least one sharp turn. After completing the swim, rest by floating.

BEGINNER (Second Class requirement 5b):

Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, swim 25 feet on the surface, stop, turn sharply, resume swimming as before, and return to starting place.

Second Class requirement 5c:

Demonstrate water rescue methods by reaching with your arm or leg, by reaching with a suitable object, and by throwing lines and objects.
