Troop 48 Update - 3/5/2024

Posted on Tue, Mar 5, 2024

Service Project – Saturday, March 23, 9 AM

The troop will have a service project at the church on Saturday, March 23 starting at 9 AM, working to rebuild and stain the fence around the air conditioner units behind the Church. Dress in old clothes suitable for working and staining. Bring a water bottle, gloves, and powered screwdrivers.

Our New Committee Chair

John Campbell will be stepping down as our Troop Committee Chair effective April 1st and Kenneth McLean will be our new Committee Chair. Many thanks to John for all he has done for the troop and thanks to Kenneth for taking on this important role.

Swim Check on April 16

Our swim check will be on Tuesday, April 16 at 7:00 PM at the Germantown Athletic Club. Start practicing swimming now to prepare if it has been a while since you have been in the pool. There will be no regular troop meeting on April 16. All Scouts and Dads need to pass the BSA Swim Check annually and qualify as a “BSA Swimmer” to participate in water activities with the Troop, such as canoeing, swimming or water sports. Scouts who have not earned Second Class can complete requirements 5b and 5c. The requirements are listed below (you must use one of the strokes listed properly and have a strong stroke to pass as a Swimmer):

SWIMMER:

Jump feetfirst into water over the head in depth. Level off and swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: sidestroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl; then swim 25 yards using an easy, resting backstroke. The 100 yards must be completed in one swim without stops and must include at least one sharp turn. After completing the swim, rest by floating.

BEGINNER (Second Class requirement 5b):

Jump feetfirst into water over your head in depth, level off and swim 25 feet on the surface, stop, turn sharply, resume swimming, then return to your starting place.

Second Class requirement 5c:

Demonstrate water rescue methods by reaching with your arm or leg, by reaching with a suitable object, and by throwing lines and objects.

Annual Health and Medical Record – due April 23

The Annual Health and Medical Record form can be found online at https://www.scouting.org/health-and-safety/ahmr/. Parts A, B1, B2, and C should be completed annually for all Scouts, dads, and leaders attending campouts and are due to Mr. Chuck Utterback by April 23. Part C requires a doctor’s signature, so make your appointments now.

  • Please TURN IN (2) COPIES of the forms to Mr. Utterback and also keep a copy for your home records. This allows Mr. Utterback to send copies in advance to the Camp Nurse and still have a copy in his possession for quick reference. You can turn in forms at a troop meeting or you can mail forms to Mr. Chuck Utterback, (see email for address).
  • Provide a copy of your insurance card with the form – both front and back
  • Provide the immunization record on Part B2 (Separate printout is also acceptable)
  • Be sure that the Scout and Parent sign the forms (on Parts A and B2)
  • Do not leave any lines blank (You must designate at least one adult to transport your Scout on Part A)
  • Do not email the health forms
  • Any changes in medications taken from what is reported on the health form should be communicated to Mr. Utterback so he has the most up-to-date information at all times.
  • If you turn in all health and medical records forms by April 23, Mr. Utterback will buy you an ice cream at summer camp!

Summer Camp Fees

The Troop Committee voted to subsidize the summer camp fee of $425 for Scouts and $125 for adults. Scouts will pay $200 and adults will pay $75 in total for summer camp. The final payments of $100 per Scout and $75 per adult are due by May 7th. There are no additional fees for merit badge classes.

Save the Date – August 24 – Troop 48 95th Anniversary Celebration

Our troop's 95th anniversary will be in June and we will be celebrating it on August 24th. At this 95th Anniversary Celebration we will be recognizing previous and current members of Troop 48 with an evening full of music, speakers, awards and good food catered by our assistant Scoutmaster, Richard Ralph.

We are looking for a keynote speaker who can engage the audience for about 15 to 20 minutes so if you have someone who would fit the bill below, please let Mr. Issing know before you ask him/her. Here is what we are looking for:

Someone to speak for 15-20 minutes on a subject that will engage the different age groups in attendance. This speaker does not have to have been registered in the B.S.A. but it would be preferred that he/she speak on something that has a tie to it. The Aims of Scouting would be something that many a speaker could address. They are: Citizenship, Character, Personal and Mental Fitness, and Leadership. The person can be someone with name recognition or just a good speaker you may know.
