Troop 48 Update - 3/23/18

Scout Skills Practice and Fly Fishing Merit Badge Orientation Tomorrow (Saturday, March 24)

All Scouts should attend Scout Skills Practice tomorrow from 9 am to Noon at the Ralph Moak garage. If you cannot attend, please let your patrol leader know.  Dress appropriately for the weather (no uniforms) and bring a water bottle. If you are interested in the Fly Fishing Merit Badge, bring a sack lunch and the orientation will be held from 12:00 to 1:00 pm.

T-Shirt Orders due this Tuesday

Attached is an order form for Troop t-shirts, the prices and choices are shown on the form. All Scouts must have a Troop t-shirt for Camporee in April and enough t-shirts to wear each day for Skymont summer camp in June or the Summer Adventure in July. Orders and money for t-shirts are due to Mrs. Teri Gulati by this Tuesday March 27. We will not be able to accept orders after March 27. You can email your order to Mrs. Gulati at hgulati@aol.com by 3/27 if you can’t be at the Troop meeting.  Please consider now if you will need a larger size soon or if you would like a long-sleeve t-shirt for the fall/winter, as we will not be ordering again for several months.

We have a full box of recycled Troop 48 T-shirts available at no cost. It would be best if your son had a clean shirt for each day of summer camp and the Summer Adventure so come look through the box at a Troop meeting. The alternative is to pack a small bottle of liquid clothes detergent so that he can hand wash his shirts in the campsite at summer camp. (The Scoutmaster will show him how.)

New BSA Requirements for Adults attending Trips 72 hours or more

Effective June 1, 2018, adults accompanying a Scouting unit who are present at the activity for 72 total hours (3 days) or more must be registered as a leader, including completion of a criminal background check and Youth Protection Training. The 72 hours need not be consecutive. So for our Troop this year, any adults who plan to attend Skymont Summer Camp need to be registered by then. To register, you must complete an adult application, pay an annual registration fee of $33 (pro-rated for a partial year), agree to the Church’s leadership policy, complete on-line Youth Protection Training and pass the background check. Please contact Kim Ridenhour for details if you would like to become a BSA registered adult.

BSA Swim Check at Germantown Athletic Club – April 17

All Scouts and Dads need to pass the BSA Swim Check annually and qualify as a “BSA Swimmer” to participate in water activities with the Troop, such as canoeing, swimming or water sports. Our May campout is canoeing, so you must be a BSA Swimmer to go on that trip.  Our Swim Check will be held on Tuesday night, April 17th at 7:00 PM at Germantown Athletic Club (GAC), 1801 Exeter Road, Germantown, instead of our regular Troop meeting. If you haven’t been swimming in a while, it would be good to get some practice in now. Scouts who have not earned Second Class can complete requirements 5b and 5c.  Each person swimming needs to complete the attached waiver form and bring it on April 17 (unless you are a member of GAC). The Troop will be paying the cost of $5 per person, however if you are a member of GAC, please use your membership card.

Health and Medical Records for Scouts and Adults – Part C Forms due April 24

  • Parts A and B of the Health form are past due – please turn these in to Mr. Ralph as soon as possible if you have not already
  • Part C of the Health form requires a physical and must be signed by a certified and licensed health-care provider, so make your doctor appointments now
  • Forms can be found at this link: www.scouting.org/filestore/HealthSafety/pdf/680-001_ABC.pdf
  • Please TURN IN (2) COPIES of Part C by April 24 to Mr. Ralph and also keep a copy for your home records. This allows Mr. Ralph to send copies in advance to the Camp Nurse and still have a copy in his possession for quick reference.
