Swim Check on March 3 – Date Change
Our swim check will be on Tuesday, March 3 at 7:30 PM at the Germantown Athletic Club, instead of on April 21 that was originally listed in our 2020 calendar. Start practicing swimming now to prepare if it has been a while since you have been in the pool. There will be no regular troop meeting at the church on March 3. All Scouts and Dads need to pass the BSA Swim Check annually and qualify as a “BSA Swimmer” to participate in water activities with the Troop, such as canoeing, swimming or water sports. Scouts who have not earned Second Class can complete requirements 5b and 5c. The requirements are listed below (you must use one of the strokes listed properly and have a strong stroke to pass as a Swimmer):
Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, and begin swimming. Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: sidestroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl; then swim 25 yards using an easy resting backstroke. The 100 yards must be swum continuously and include at least one sharp turn. After completing the swim, rest by floating.
BEGINNER (Second Class requirement 5b):
Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, swim 25 feet on the surface, stop, turn sharply, resume swimming as before, and return to starting place.
Second Class requirement 5c:
Demonstrate water rescue methods by reaching with your arm or leg, by reaching with a suitable object, and by throwing lines and objects.
First Aid Training
We are offering first aid training on two dates below (you would only attend one of these) at the church in our Scout Room 111. The training will include first aid, American Heart Association Heartsaver (CPR) and AED training. Our instructor will be Angelo Lamar who is a trainer for the Memphis Fire Department and he is offering the training at no cost. Note this will be a training and not a certification. This is open to our Scouts, Leaders, parents/adults and our Cub Scout Pack Leaders and church employees. If you would like to sign up, please contact Kim Ridenhour with your choice of the two dates (firstname.lastname@example.org). The class size will be limited, so please sign up soon if you are interested. Thanks to Rodney Donald for getting us connected to his friend Angelo Lamar!
Saturday, March 14: 9 am-Noon
