• Date and time: Saturday, February 29, 2020; 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

• Location: 4233 Louis Carruthers Dr., Memphis, TN 38118 (building on the left side of the road with a white "Flintco" sign in front; there is a gated parking lot with "Employees Only" signs that Scouts and their parents can ignore)

• Age requirement: Scouts must be thirteen (13) or older to participate.

• Attire: Scouts should not wear their uniforms; Scouts and parents should wear jeans, work/hiking boots, and bring safety glasses and work gloves (if they have them). Be prepared for the weather!

Scouts interested need to present the Scoutmaster with a merit badge application (blue card).

Swim Check on March 3 – Date Change

Our swim check will be on Tuesday, March 3 at 7:30 PM at the Germantown Athletic Club, instead of on April 21 that was originally listed in our 2020 calendar. Start practicing swimming now to prepare if it has been a while since you have been in the pool. There will be no regular troop meeting at the church on March 3.  All Scouts and Dads need to pass the BSA Swim Check annually and qualify as a “BSA Swimmer” to participate in water activities with the Troop, such as canoeing, swimming or water sports. Scouts who have not earned Second Class can complete requirements 5b and 5c. The requirements are listed below (you must use one of the strokes listed properly and have a strong stroke to pass as a Swimmer):

SWIMMER:

Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, and begin swimming. Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: sidestroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl; then swim 25 yards using an easy resting backstroke. The 100 yards must be swum continuously and include at least one sharp turn. After completing the swim, rest by floating.

BEGINNER (Second Class requirement 5b):

Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, swim 25 feet on the surface, stop, turn sharply, resume swimming as before, and return to starting place.

Second Class requirement 5c:

Demonstrate water rescue methods by reaching with your arm or leg, by reaching with a suitable object, and by throwing lines and objects.

First Aid Training

We are offering first aid training on two dates below (you would only attend one of these) at the church in our Scout Room 111. The training will include first aid, American Heart Association Heartsaver (CPR) and AED training. Our instructor will be Angelo Lamar who is a trainer for the Memphis Fire Department and he is offering the training at no cost. Note this will be a training and not a certification. This is open to our Scouts, Leaders, parents/adults and our Cub Scout Pack Leaders and church employees. If you would like to sign up, please contact Kim Ridenhour with your choice of the two dates (kim.ridenhour@mercer.com). The class size will be limited, so please sign up soon if you are interested. Thanks to Rodney Donald for getting us connected to his friend Angelo Lamar!

Saturday, March 14: 9 am-Noon

Saturday, March 21: 1 pm-4 pm

Summer Adventure in July – St. Louis

Our Summer Adventure will be a fun trip to St. Louis July 23-26 (Thursday-Sunday) including the City Museum, The Gateway Arch and the St. Louis Science Center. The cost per person will be $75, and the troop is subsidizing part of the cost. The first deposit of $25 will be due April 7, and the $50 balance will be due by May 5th.  Thanks to Yvonne Gamblin for planning this trip!

New Form for Annual Health and Medical Record for 2020

There is a new version of the Annual Health and Medical Record for 2020. Please use this form going forward. It can be found online at https://www.scouting.org/health-and-safety/ahmr/. Parts A, B, and C should be completed annually for all Scouts and adults attending campouts and are due to Mr. Richard Ralph by April 28. Part C requires a doctor’s signature, so make your appointments now.

  • Please TURN IN (2) COPIES of the forms to Mr. Ralph and also keep a copy for your home records. This allows Mr. Ralph to send copies in advance to the Camp Nurse and still have a copy in his possession for quick reference.
  • Provide a copy of your insurance card with the form – both front and back
  • Provide the immunization record on Part B (Separate printout is also acceptable)
  • Be sure that the Scout and Parent sign the forms (on Parts A and B)

· Do not leave any lines blank (You must designate at least one adult to transport your Scout on Part A)

· Do not email the health forms

· Any changes in medications taken from what is reported on the health form should be communicated to Mr. Ralph so he has the most up-to-date information at all times.
