Troop 48 Update - 2/28/20

Posted on Fri, Feb 28, 2020

NOTE: There will be NO troop meeting at the church this Tuesday, 3/3, we will have our BSA Swim Check instead at the Germantown Athletic Club, 1801 Exeter Rd, Germantown, TN.

BSA Swim Check – this Tuesday

All Scouts and Dads need to pass the BSA Swim Check annually and qualify as a “BSA Swimmer” to participate in water activities with the Troop, such as canoeing, swimming or water sports. Our Swim Check will be held on Tuesday night, March 3rd at the Germantown Athletic Club instead of our regular Troop meeting. The schedule for what time to arrive will be:

7:30 – Battering Rams Patrol & SPL, ASPL, JASM

7:45 – Phoenix Patrol

8:00 – Cobalt Foxes Patrol

Adults – any time before 8:00 pm

Each person swimming needs to complete the attached Guest Waiver form and bring it with them on March 3rd. If you are a member of Germantown Athletic Club, please bring your membership pass and you won’t need the waiver form. When you enter the Club, please check in with Mrs. Kim Ridenhour and turn in your waiver form before heading down to the pool.

Scouts who have not earned Second Class can complete requirements 5b and 5c. The requirements are listed below (you must use one of the strokes listed properly and have a strong stroke to pass as a Swimmer):

SWIMMER:

Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, and begin swimming. Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: sidestroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl; then swim 25 yards using an easy resting backstroke. The 100 yards must be swum continuously and include at least one sharp turn. After completing the swim, rest by floating.

BEGINNER (Second Class requirement 5b):

Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, swim 25 feet on the surface, stop, turn sharply, resume swimming as before, and return to starting place.

Second Class requirement 5c:

Demonstrate water rescue methods by reaching with your arm or leg, by reaching with a suitable object, and by throwing lines and objects.

Troop 48 T-Shirt Orders due March 10

Attached is an order form for Troop t-shirts, the prices and choices are shown on the form. All Scouts must have a Troop t-shirt for Camporee in April and enough t-shirts to wear each day for Skymont summer camp in June or the Summer Adventure in July. Orders and money for t-shirts are due to Mrs. Teri Gulati by Tuesday March 10. We will not be able to accept orders after March 10. You can email your order to Mrs. Gulati at hgulati@aol.com by 3/10 if you can’t be at the Troop meeting. Please consider now if you will need a larger size soon or if you would like a long-sleeve t-shirt for the fall/winter, as we will not be ordering again for several months.

First Aid Training

We are offering first aid training on two dates below (you would only attend one of these) at the church in our Scout Room 111. The training will include first aid, American Heart Association Heartsaver (CPR) and AED training. Our instructor will be Angelo Lamar who is a trainer for the Memphis Fire Department and he is offering the training at no cost. Note this will be a training and not a certification. This is open to our Scouts, Leaders, parents/adults and our Cub Scout Pack Leaders and church employees. If you would like to sign up, please contact Kim Ridenhour with your choice of the two dates (kim.ridenhour@mercer.com). The class size will be limited, so please sign up soon if you are interested, but no later than March 10th. Thanks to Rodney Donald for getting us connected to his friend Angelo Lamar!

Saturday, March 14: 9 am-Noon – Almost Full

Saturday, March 21: 1 pm-4 pm – Space Available, but need 4 more people to sign up to keep this time

Summer Adventure in July – St. Louis

Our Summer Adventure will be a fun trip to St. Louis July 23-26 (Thursday-Sunday) including the City Museum, The Gateway Arch and the St. Louis Science Center. The cost per person will be $75, and the troop is subsidizing part of the cost. The first deposit of $25 will be due April 7, and the $50 balance will be due by May 5th.  Thanks to Yvonne Gamblin for planning this trip!

New Form for Annual Health and Medical Record for 2020

There is a new version of the Annual Health and Medical Record for 2020. Please use this form going forward. It can be found online at https://www.scouting.org/health-and-safety/ahmr/. Parts A, B, and C should be completed annually for all Scouts and adults attending campouts and are due to Mr. Richard Ralph by April 28. Part C requires a doctor’s signature, so make your appointments now.

  • Please TURN IN (2) COPIES of the forms to Mr. Ralph and also keep a copy for your home records. This allows Mr. Ralph to send copies in advance to the Camp Nurse and still have a copy in his possession for quick reference.
  • Provide a copy of your insurance card with the form – both front and back
  • Provide the immunization record on Part B (Separate printout is also acceptable)
  • Be sure that the Scout and Parent sign the forms (on Parts A and B)

· Do not leave any lines blank (You must designate at least one adult to transport your Scout on Part A)

· Do not email the health forms

· Any changes in medications taken from what is reported on the health form should be communicated to Mr. Ralph so he has the most up-to-date information at all times.
